Lydia Besong the Cameroon playwright has received support from several actors and writers in a campaign to stop the planned deportation of both her and her husband Bernard Bately from the UK by the Border Agency. The UK writer’s group ‘English Pen’ has come out in support of Besong who has written three plays since her arrival to the UK in 2006, one of which is titled ‘How I became an asylum seeker’. Besong is claiming asylum following her rape while imprisoned in her home country before travelling to the UK. Amnesty International have confirmed that President Paul Biya’s regime persecutes the SCNC, a pressure group which campaigns for southern Cameroon’s independence. Besong was a member of the SCNC in Cameroon, and had been targeted for persecution, believing their lives are in danger upon returning.

In a recent BBC interview Fiennes stated “There is an expressiveness, an extraordinary elasticity of expression in Shakespeare which is thrilling to me and I hope other people find it thrilling. That’s why I’m doing this. I think the language still connects.”

David Hockney the 74 year old UK painter and considered one of the most influential UK artists of the twentieth century has been profiled in an article by Jonathon Jones, describing him as an ‘enfant terrible’ who “does what he wants, and paints what he wants, and says what he wants, and the results are impressive”. Hockney considered an important contributor to the 1960’s Pop art movement, is argued by Jones to continue influencing modern popular culture in three unique ways. “As a painter, he has an exhibition of new, super-sized Yorkshire landscapes opening … As a fan of new technology when it serves his creative purposes [a noted exponent of iPad art]. And as a provocative thinker, he has a book of interviews about his ideas on art …”

Carolyn Bourne the 60 year old UK flower breeder and step mother of soon to be wedded step son Freddie has become an internet sensation, over an email she sent to her 29 year old daughter in law to be Heidi, regarding her manners. Bourne’s email criticized Heidi’s “lack of grace” referring to her as “an ideal candidate for the Ladette to Lady television series”. Heidi on sent the email to her friends, who in turn posted the email contents to various websites, leading to it going viral. The contents of the email included references to behavior when at other people’s homes, such as adjusting sleeping times to match the house norms, daring to define what she is capable of eating as a diabetic, and having second helpings without invitation. Peter Ware Higgs the 81 year old UK renowned theoretical physicist for whom the theoretical Higgs boson (predicted existence of a new particle) was named, may well see his prediction evidenced at the Large Hadron Collider located at CERN in Switzerland. The Higgs boson is described as the most sought after particle in modern physics, and referenced by the media as the ‘God Particle’. While on many occasions over the years physicists believed they have seen hints of the particles existence, but there has not yet been any substantive proof to confirm the elusive ‘goddamn’ particle’s actual existence. Higgs is not the only physicist to predict the existence of the particle as an important ingredient of particle physics, the non-existence of which would leave open the question of how particles would acquire mass. Patrick Hewes Stewart the 70 year old English actor and recipient of an OBE allowing him the title of Sir, has announced his desire for assisted euthanasia when his time arrives. Stewart has become a patron of the lobby group ‘Dignity in Dying’ to assist their campaign for legislative changes to enable assisted euthanasia. Stewart states that having no choice in your birth does not prevent you from having a choice in the manner of your death, which current legislation forces some to take their lives in unfortunate often ghastly circumstances. The issue of assisted suicide has received significant debate in the UK with a recent airing of a BBC documentary that has been criticized by a counter lobby group ‘Care not Killing’. This work is about iconic people, places and events of our day.  Recorded visually through daily compilations of manipulated digital images, the work is posted online and disseminated via online media and social networks. The works are diaristic in nature, that metaphorically record a spectator’s experience of the contemporary digital age.  The resulting work intentionally has a painterly aesthetic acknowledging the artists historical painting practice.

Adapting Pop Art’s notion of mass media imagery into a context of the contemporary digital age, the work draws on a myriad points of reference. Utilizing fractured images to provide an allusion to the digital noise pounding away daily into our sub consciousness.  The work diverges from the traditional Pop Art notion of a pronounced repetition of a consumer icon, instead this work focuses on the deluge of contemporary digital content. The compilation of the fragmented imagery is vividly distractive, not unlike cable surfing or a jaunt through Times Square.

The work is premised on the basis that Pop art in its beginnings, freeze-framed what consumers of popular culture experienced into iconic visual abstractions. With the advent of the techno age, visual information circulates in such quantities, so rapidly and exponentially, that to comprehend a fraction of it all becomes a kind of production process in itself.  Hence this work considers fragmented elements of Pop Culture through an artistic and conceptual exploration of specific people and events of the day.
