Haim Saban the 67 year old Egyptian born Israeli-American television and media mogul has been noted by Charles Davis an activist writer in an article published on Aljazeera as “One of the wealthiest men in the US… regularly “gossips with Rupert Murdoch, vacations with Bill Clinton … and confers with former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres… “When I see Ahmadinejad, I see Hitler,” Saban said of the Iranian president the same year he purchased Univision. …meanwhile, Saban hosted a “Friends of the Israel Defence Forces” fundraiser that, according to the Jewish Journal, was “teeming with Los Angeles’ most hawkish, hard-line lovers of Israel”. And, lest anyone think he separates his personal views from his businesses, at a 2009 conference in Israel he outlined “three ways to be influential in American politics,” which according to New Yorker magazine consist of “mak[ing] donations to political parties, establish[ing] think tanks, and control[ing] media outlets.” And in “targeting media properties”, the New Yorker noted, “Saban frankly concedes his political agenda, as evidenced by his repeated efforts to purchase the Los Angeles Times… I thought it was time that it turn from a pro-Palestinian paper into a balanced paper,” Saban said when asked to explain his interest in the paper.”

Stephen Mayne the 42 year old Australian journalist and shareholder activist, renown for founding Crikey.com.au an online independent news service has lashed out at News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch during the annual shareholders meeting in Los Angeles USA. Mayne, a director at the Australian Shareholders’ Association, former News Corp employee, and longtime shareholder has attended 12 previous annual meetings of News Corp. Other shareholders, including Tom Watson the British Labor politician who led the investigation into the infamous phone tapping scandal also spoke out at the meeting, unsuccessfully calling for Murdoch to relinquish his position to an independent chairman. Murdoch claimed he would get to the bottom of the scandal and establish a procedure to put things right. Mayne’s response was “You’ve been treating us like mushrooms for a long time … You’re still trying to do it.”

Clive Goodman the 53 year old former royal editor and reporter for the Murdoch News International owned 168 year old News of the World (NotW), has again come under scrutiny following the publication of a 2007 letter from him to News International that phone hacking was widely discussed at meetings of senior editorial staff. Goodman had been imprisoned in 2007 for four months pleading guilty to illegally intercepting phone messages. The letter was sent as part of his claim for damages against NotW for wrongful dismissal, and he was subsequently paid a substantial sum by NotW in settlements. Rupert Murdoch and his son James Murdoch now face further embarrassing new allegations of cover-up after the publication of the letter, and dishonesty in their evidence to the UK parliament committee hearing. Jonathan May-Bowles the 26 year old comedian left-wing blogger known as Jonnie Marbles who had been convicted and sentenced to six weeks imprisonment for the throwing of shaving foam at News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch in the UK parliament, has had his sentence reduced by a third. District judge Daphne Wickham told May-Bowles at the appeal, “Your counsel has sought to persuade us that this was something of a slapstick event, a custard pie throwing … used in all sorts of comedy situations … That might be funny or have an element of comedy about it in a different situation, but not in this situation … It is impossible to imagine that he [May-Bowles] did this without knowing that it would attract huge, probably worldwide, publicity”.
