Lucian Michael Freud the renowned UK painter who recently died at the age 88 and primarily known for his figurative portrait paintings of thick impasted paints has been rumored to have fathered as many as 40 children. Although this figure is believed to be greatly exaggerated, Freud’s passion for painting was not, often choosing his subjects from people in his life including lovers, children, family and friends. This autobiographical approach to his work was often all consuming as he spent thousands of hours on specific pieces, beginning with a charcoal drawing on canvas, then built up with paints heavily applied to the a small area depicting the subjects head, then body, back to the head and working outwards from there – always leaving a small section without paint until completion.
