Enid Gabriella ‘Biella’ Coleman the American anthropologist, academic and author whose work focuses on hacker culture and online activism has published an article on Aljazeera about the Anonymous Hactivitst group. In the article Coleman states “… as a masked entity bearing the name Anonymous – it relays an urgent message about anonymity to contemplate. Given the contemporary reality of a corporate and state controlled surveillance apparatus, Anonymous stands out, compels, and enchants for a very particular reason: it has provided a small but potent oasis of anonymity in the current expansive desert of surveillance, much like the one quite literally being built in the Utah desert right now by the NSA. In an era when most of our personal data is archived online – in a time when states and corporations collect, market, and monetise our plans and preferences – there is indeed something hopeful, one might even say necessary, in Anonymous’ effacement of the self, in the cloaking of their identities, in striking at legislation seen to threaten privacy, and seeking to expose the depth and extent of privatised government contractors that have rapidly emerged as a security apparatus parallel to that of the national government.”

Hector Xavier Monsegur the 28 year old Puetro Rican unemployed computer hacker living in New York has been identified as ‘Sabu’, the notorious founder of the hacking group LulzSec, turned informant for the FBI. Monsequr has apparently been working with the agency for the past ten months, aiding them to identify other hackers of the group. Monsequr the father of two maintained his pretence till the end, even tweeting on the final day of his outing his opposition to the government as five members of his group were arrested and his identity disclosed by the FBI. Tweeting “The federal government is run by a bunch of fucking cowards. Don’t give in to these people. Fight back. Stay strong.” The LulzSec hacker goup of about 10 people began with an attack on the Fox website, then Sony Pictures, followed by companies involved with online games, and News International changing The Sun’s website’s front page. However the FBI became extensively involved once they hacked into FBI’s affiliated InfraGard, the CIA website, US Congress and the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency. Anonymous, another hacker group reacted to Sabu’s outing and betrayal of LulzSec on Twitter, “#Anonymous is a hydra, cut off one head and we grow two back”.

Anthony Bologna a New York Deputy Inspector of Police with the NYPD pepper spray attacked several female protestors during the “Occupy Wall Street” protest organized by the “hacktivist” group Anonymous. Police suddenly escalated their crowd control efforts by corralling protestors behind orange mesh netting. Bologna caught on video then approached the occupants corralled onto the footpath and unprovoked applied pepper spray at four women for no apparent reason. Bologna is currently the subject of a civil rights lawsuit relating to false arrest and civil rights violations that took place during the 2004 Republican National Convention. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, under pressure relating to the abuse announced that all incidents involved in the “Occupy Wall Street” protests were being referred to the Civilian Complaints Review Board and the NYPD’s Internal Affairs unit.

Anonymous the secretive collective of hackers formed in 2003 to initiate Civil disobedience spread through the internet has come under intense law enforcement response in the US with an FBI investigation resulting in 16 people arrested. The arrests follow a spate of online attacks bringing down Web sites of governments and corporations deemed by the collective to be aiding the persecution of WikiLeaks. Anonymous uses a program called the ‘Low Orbit Ion Cannon’ to overwhelm a victim’s Web site with large packets of data. Anonymous has no leader or controlling committee, relying on the collective power of its participants acting in concert to an agreed agenda. The collective operates under the motto “ We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.” Inspired by Ryan J Reilly ow.ly/5RYR8 image source Vincent Diamante ow.ly/5RYXs We are Anonymous, We are Legion, Expect us (August 4 2011)

Roland Emmerich the 55 year old German film director renowned for his highly visual effect disaster and action films has controversially questioned Shakespeare’s authorship of his plays and sonnets in a soon to be released movie titled ‘Anonymous’. Emmerich depicts the nobleman 17th Earl of Oxford Edward de Vere as the true author of the plays, and Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon as merely an “inarticulate buffoon”. The argument being that the Earl of Oxford needed to remain anonymous due to the highly political nature of the plays in the context of the succession struggles during the late reign of Queen Elizabeth. Emmerich is often criticized for over relying of visual effects to counter flimsy narratives and factual inaccuracies, to which Emmerich counters that he is a filmmaker providing enjoyable fictional entertainment.
