Richard James Verone a 59 year old US unemployed and medically uninsured truck driver attempted to rob a bank for $1 in order to obtain a jail sentence so he could obtain medical attention to his many ailments. Unarmed, Verone entered a North Carolina bank presenting the teller with a note reading ‘This is a bank robbery. Please only give me one dollar’, then proceeded to await on a couch while the teller called police. Verone who does not have a criminal history undertook the robbery hoping for a three year sentence so as to receive medical treatment that he cannot afford for a growth on his chest and ruptured disks. Unfortunately for Verone $1 is insufficient for a bank robbery charge, instead he was charged with ‘larceny from a person’.
