Wesley Ernest Brown at age 103 is the oldest US federal judge still hearing cases, having been appointed to the position 49 years ago in 1962 by then President John F Kennedy to the Wichita Kansas District bench. Brown attends to his court assisted by a powered wheelchair, sitting behind his large timber bench that covers most of his shrinking frame, revealing his head, nose tubes and oxygen tank, often scaring litigants as to whether he’ll see out the hearing. Although his body is failing with age, his mental attributes appear not to have diminished, he uses a computer on his desk to keep abreast of trends and current issues. He plans on staying on at the court until he leaves feet first or advised by his colleagues he is no longer able to undertake his work.
