Eric Torpy an Oklahoma inmate nicknamed “Birdman” following his arrest for armed robbery and shooting with intent to kill, is now regretting having to serve a 33 year imprisonment sentence to honor his sporting hero Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics. Torpy initially sentenced in 2005 to 30 years requested the judge to increase his period of incarceration to reflect the number 33 worn on Bird’s jersey. At the sentencing hearing Torpy said to the judge “you might as well just give me three more and give me a number I like”. With the passing of time and perhaps a realization that Larry Bird wouldn’t particularly care, Torpy now has a different perspective “I’m sorry Larry but I don’t love you that much to hang out to 2033”. Patricia Spottedcrow a 25 year old Oklahoma mother of four children has been sentenced as a first time felony offender to 12 years imprisonment for the sale of $31 worth of marijuana to an undercover police officer. Spottedcrow had been arrested with two other of her family members, her mother received lengthy probation on more serious charges, and her brother also probation of lesser charges. Spottedcrow however failed to show the necessary remorse to satisfy Judge Susie Pritchett. Pritchett was quoted saying the "sentence fit the crime" as "Ms. Spottedcrow showed no signs of remorse, nor did she seem to even care about what she was doing to her children”. Spottedcrow’s four children are now being cared for by her ‘accomplice’ mother, who can’t afford the costs to visit the prison.
