Patrice Chéreau the 66 year old French theatre director who is currently in London rehearsing his first play in the UK has provided a comparative perspective on French and English productions in an interview with Stephen Moss of the Guardian. Chéreau stated in his interview that he enjoyed English actors for their very disciplined and open work ethic, whereas in France a lot of time is spent waiting for the arrival of inspiration. He argues that France is the country of directors, whereas England is the country of writers. Chéreau is renowned for upsetting theatre traditionalists with his personal tinkering of operatic productions, with audiences initially disliking his work, for which he did not seem to mind as in his words “it’s OK to be hated.” Inspired by Stephen Moss ow.ly/4KASu image source Nicolas Genin ow.ly/4KAOn It’s OK to be hated (May 7 2011)

Brian William Haw the 61 year old English protestor who lives in a camp in London’s Parliament Square for the past 10 years as a symbol of anti-war protest against the UK & US foreign policy is likely to face eviction following his failed bid to appeal an order granted to the conservative mayor of London Boris Johnson, to take possession of the grassed area in the gardens of the Square, combined with an injunction against Haw. The decision came as Haw is in Germany undertaking cancer treatment, and effectively prevents him from sleeping on the grassed area. If Haw is to continue his decade long protest upon his return, his only option would be to sleep on the pavement adjacent to passing motor vehicles. Anish Kapoor the 55 year old Indian sculptor who has resided in London since the early 1970’s and is a Royal Academician, CBE and supporter of the British Humanist Association has lashed out at the British conservative government cuts to the arts. Kapoor a Turner prize winning artist has accused the government of neo-rightwing policies in rolling back arts funding to the Thatcher years, warning the damage will take decades to recover. Arts funding in the past has enabled many of today’s high profile British artists to emerge internationally including Lucian Freud, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley and Francis Bacon. Kapoor is angry that young artists today will not have the same support from public institutions that he received. This digital art work is about iconic people, places and events of our day.  Recorded visually through daily compilations of manipulated digital images, the work is posted online and disseminated via online media and social networks. The works are diaristic in nature, that metaphorically record a spectator’s experience of the contemporary digital age.  The resulting work intentionally has a painterly aesthetic acknowledging the artists historical painting practice.
