Shane Willis a 33 year old burglar and recalcitrant criminal has been jailed for six years for offences including the sending of lewd photographs of his penis from stolen cellphones netted during his latest four month drug induced spree. Willis took the photographs with four of the stolen phones and forwarded them to four victims contact lists. The lists included women and young teenage children, some of whom were horrified suffering trauma and ongoing psychological effects as a result. Willis was apprehended when police recovered quantities of stolen goods from his home that included jewellery and electronic equipment.

Michel Thomas known as Michel Houellebecq the 52 year old French best known international author has been awarded the Prix Goncourt Prize for his book about the Parisian art scene titled ‘The Map and the Territory’. Houellebecq won the French top literary award after previously being nominated in 1998 and 2005. Houellebecq a controversial figure had been accused by Muslim groups of insulting Islam culminating in him winning a court case in 2002 for allegedly inciting racial hatred. Houellebecq has written five novels all translated into many languages. He currently resides as a recluse in Ireland and takes his pseudonym from his maternal grandmother who raised him from the age of six.

George W. Bush former president of the United States has released his memoir titled ‘Decision Points’ two years after leaving the presidency.  The memoir defends his decisions he made throughout the eight year period of his presidency.  In an attempt to promote the book, Bush participated in an interview with popular talk show host Oprah Winfrey at her Chicago studio.  During the course of the interview he declared he was through with politics and would not be wading back into what he refereed to as the swamp. Bush previously lamented as the lowest point of his term related to Hurricane Katrina and the perception that he was racist, particularly within the African American community.

Queen Elizabeth II the British monarch has joined the social network Facebook with a page that allows users to view and receive feeds from her home page messages with news on the Royals and events from her diary.  No one is permitted to become the Queen’s facebook direct friend however and can only receive the informational feeds.  On the release of the page the number of people who clicked the like button to the site went viral with 130 thousand people on single day of the release.  The Facebook page complements the Queen’s other social network sites including Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.

Lyndsey Fiddler the mother of a ten day old baby daughter has been charged in Oklahoma with second-degree manslaughter after placing the child in a washing machine along with a bundle of laundry for a full spin cycle.  Fiddler apparently left the living room saying that she intended to feed the child only to return later without the child and collapse on the couch. The baby was later found in the laundry washing machine after loud banging noises could be heard. Fiddler had been arrested four months into her pregnancy for drug related offences and is alleged to have been on a three day methamphetamine binge prior to the child’s death.

Barack Obama the US president accepted the responsibility for the Democrats ‘shellacking’ in the congressional elections, leading to control of the congress ironically being handed back to those that created the worst recession since the 1930s and who consistently stymied his attempts to reinvigorate the US economy. The rise of the ultra right wing conservative Tea Party activists along with cable television and radio shock jocks helped set the agenda of the debate that lead to the demise of Obama’s previous presidential winning popularity. Unpopular measures highlighted by his opposition included the bailout of the banks and car industry, while ignoring his efforts at job creation and reforming the way ‘Washington’ does its business.

Eugenie Blanchard aged 114 listed as the world’s oldest person has died. Blanchard was born in 1896 at the French West Indies territory of Saint-Barthelemy, an island 250 kilometres north of Guadeloupe. She pursued her faith as a Catholic nun in Curacao a Dutch West Indies colony, returning on her retirement to Saint-Barthelemy to live out a further 30 years. Blanchard was renown with the local population of Curacao for her offering of sweet treats to attract children along for religious classes, leading to her nickname ‘Douchy’ a reference to the word sweets in the local dialect. A family member of Blanchard is quoted as believing her long live resulted from a decision to give her virginity to God.

Richard Champion de Crespigny the 53 year old pilot Captain of a Qantas Airbus A380 has received praise for his calming effect during an in-flight crisis when an engine of the plane exploded with debris tearing through and piercing the left wing not long after the plane had taken off from Singapore. de Crespigny who initially trained with the Royal Australian Air Force and is a thirty five year veteran, quickly and clearly detailed to the passengers the situation they were confronting and the intended procedure required before landing could take place. Procedures included dumping of fuel and an hour long holding pattern as system checks were undertaken.

Ben Bernanke the chairman of the American central bank the Federal Reserve has commenced a second round of quantitative easing referred to as QE2, by electronically creating $US600 billion dollars into the financial system through long-term government bonds on top of the $US1.75 trillion created under the earlier round of quantitative easing. The conventional way to stimulate the economy through official interest rates in the United States are at rock bottom between 0 and 0.25 per cent, leaving this metaphorical printing of more money as the last means to try and boost borrowing and consumption in the ailing economy. Martin Scorsese the 68 year old American film director and producer of Italian origin from New York presented the restored version of Federico Fellini’s back-and-white classic “La Dolce Vita” at the Rome Film Festival. Scorsese an admirer of Italian cinema films helped restore the film through his Film Foundation, an organization established to preserve aged and deteriorating films for future generations.  Scorsese claims to have been heavily influenced as a youth by this particular film released in the early 1960s depicting Rome’s celebrity nightlife of the previous decade as a satirical spectacle of life, society and culture. The three hour epic length film broke open cinematic narratives through its abandonment of any story or plot.

Dilma Rousseff the 63 year old former left leaning guerrilla leader who had been jailed and brutally tortured by the Brazilian military during the 1970s has won Brazil’s presidential election becoming the first woman to win such high office in one of the world’s highest growth economies. Rousseff an economist and former energy minister promised to follow the policies of her predecessor and mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that has successfully lifted twenty million people out of poverty in the Latin American country. Working as the extremely popular former president Lula da Silva’s chief of staff, Rousseff over time became more pragmatic to ultimately receive his decisive support during the election.

American cable television comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert held their ‘Rally to Restore Sanity’ at the Washington DC Mall which drew an enormous crowd stretching from the Congressional Capital buildings to the National Monument. Access to the event proved some-what difficult with people arriving hours late due to the stressed public transport and gridlocked surrounding streets. The rally although deemed as a non-political event was in essence a reaction to the earlier ultra conservative cable television figure Glenn Beck lead ‘Rally to restore honour’ that was seen as a mobilization of the extremist Tea Party movement in the lead up to the American mid-term elections.

Vik Muniz the 49 year old Brazilian American photographer and artist renowned for his use of surprising mediums to reproduce classical imagery, stars in the award winning documentary film “Waste Land“ bringing him to a much broader audience. The documentary film directed by Lucy Walker tracks the development of a series of photographic portraits made from garbage. The series called “Pictures of Garbage” were created by Muniz at Jardim Gramacho one of the largest open air dumps on the outskirts of Rio. The work was a collaboration with the dumps underclass catadores, the informal workers who scour the dump for recyclables providing Brazil with an infamous reputation for its success in reclamation efforts.

William Kipchirchir Samoei arap Ruto the 44 year old Kenyan Higher Education Minister has been suspended from office after three constitutional court judges dismissed his plea not to stand trial over corruption allegations of defrauding a state corporation over the sale of forest land.  Ruto a potential 2012 presidential election candidate from the Rift Valley of Kenya sort the order claiming he would not get a fair trial, denying any wrongdoing and the charges were politically motivated. The country’s new constitution states that anyone facing criminal charges should step aside from public office. The constitution was designed to avoid the mayhem of the 2007 general election that resulted in approximately 1300 deaths with thousands dislocated.

Osama bin Laden the 53 year old Al Qaeda chief has warned France that its unjust treatment of Muslims could result in the killing of five of its abducted citizens in Niger unless it  withdraws troops from Afghanistan and abandons its recent law that bans the wearing of the burqua in public. The abducted citizens are employees of French firms working in the mining district of Arlit in Niger. France has nearly 4000 troops in Afghanistan, and recently approved a ban on full face veils citing security concerns along with the violation of  women’s human rights as the justification. Tariq Aziz the 74 year old former deputy to Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi regime and it’s public face to the outside world as its foreign minister has been sentenced to hang for his role in the commission of wholesale murder. Aziz took part in a campaign to demonize the country’s political opposition, primarily the Shiite Dawa party, through a process of organized torture imprisonment and murder following an assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein in 1982. Two other co-accuseds were also sentenced to death. Aziz is a Christian and is likely to receive humanitarian intervention from the Vatican to urge the Iraqi authorities not to proceed with the death sentence.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens born in 1835 better known as Mark Twain the author of the much loved characters Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer left behind at the time of his death in 1910 an unedited 5000 page memoir with specific instructions the documents were not to be released for 100 years, that milestone has now been reached. Clemens renown for being outspoken was largely informed from his years as a river boat captain along the Mississippi River and his extensive international travel. After keeping us waiting for a century Clemens will finally reveal all from a personal perspective with the release of the first volume of an eventual trilogy of his autobiography.

Randy Quaid and his wife Evi Quaid have both been arrested on US issued warrants in Vancouver after having fled to Canada from the United States to seek refugee status. In an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing the couple reported they felt their lives were in danger after eight of their acting friends had been murdered and they feared they would be next. The Hollywood actor having starred in the movie Brokeback Mountain, and his wife fled California missing a court hearing over an illegal squatting case involving their former home in Santa Barbara. A California judge issued the arrest warrants for the Quaids, who were subsequently released by the Immigration and Refugee Board on a $10k cash bond.

Yousaf Raza Gilani the Pakistani Prime Minister came under threat following the arrest of suspects planning to detonate a car bomb made from large amounts of fertilizer.  The evidence associated with the planned improvised explosive device was seized along with several suspects.  Their plot was to kill Yousaf Raza Gilani by attacking him at his compound in the Punjab provincial city of Multan located nearly 400 kilometers southeast of Islamabad the nation’s capital city. Claims have been made the suspects are militants from Pakistan’s often volatile tribal region, funded with kilo’s of gold and silver, and acting under orders of Kari Imram the Taliban leader of Miran Shah an offshoot group in North Waziristan.

Ai Weiwei aged 53 the renown Chinese artist has encountered health and safety concerns with his work “Sunflower Seeds,” currently exhibited at the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern. The Tate in consultation with Ai Weiwei have decided to close visitor’s physical interaction with the work due to dust that was stirred. The piece comprises approximately 100 million hand-painted black and white porcelain sunflower seeds spread throughout the Turbine Hall some 100mm deep.  The shells crackle when walked on, having been designed for tactility and the interaction from visitors. Visitors view a gray expanse from the bridge that spans the Turbine Hall one floor up, experienced now only from behind ropes.

Tom Bosley aged 83 has died of heart failure. Bosley is best remembered as the father Howard Cunningham of Richie Cunningham on the eleven season long 1970’s television series Happy Days, although Bosley did go onto other starring roles in murder mystery type series. His career started on stage where he worked for a decade before transforming into television roles.  He has been appropriately acknowledged by former colleagues Henry Winkler who played the cool Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli, and Ron Howard who played the more conservative son Richie who made tribute to him Bosley describing him as a wonderful artist.

Saud Abdulaziz Bin Nasser Al Saud a Saudi prince in a case prosecutors said had a sexual element at a London hotel was found guilty of murder and grievous bodily harm in the killing of his aide Bandar Abdulaziz. Jurors took an hour and a half to reach their unanimous verdict. Abdulaziz died from a severe beating that left bite marks on his arm face and ears fracturing his ribs and neck culminating in swelling and bruising of his brain. Abdulaziz did not give evidence in his own defense nor deny the killing, merely stating that he did not intend the death. The prince’s father is a nephew of King Abdullah.

Justin Bieber aged 16 the tween heart throb singer is being investigated over an assault on a 12 year old boy while playing laser tag in British Colombia Canada where he allegedly retaliated to taunts, cornering the boy and hitting him. Bieber denied the alleged assault, saying he accidentally touched the boy’s face following an incident where the 12 year old harassed Bieber by targeting him continuously during the course of the game. In frustration Bieber told the boy to cease who in turn responded “What are you going to do about it, faggot?” No charges are likely to be made according to police investigating.

Russell Williams a 47 year old Canadian air force colonel confessed to the murder of two women, sexually assaulting two others, and having broken into homes to souvenir women’s lingerie.  Williams the commander of Canada’s largest air force base pleaded guilty to 86 lurid sex crimes including the murders and rape had as a pilot been entrusted with the flying of the Canadian prime minister and with Queen Elizabeth on her visit to Canada. Williams video recorded and photographed his victims keeping them as “trophies”. Angela Merkel the Germany Chancellor and leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU) has claimed that German approach to a multicultural society has utterly failed in not demanding immigrants entering the country immediately speak German. Germany is home to four million Muslims perceiving Merkel’s comments as inflammatory toward this population and intended to pacify her internal conservative party critics over a debate on immigration and Islam. Merkel claimed that allowing people of different cultural backgrounds to live side by side without integrating had not worked and that little had been required of immigrants to integrate.  Her comments foreshadow a tougher stance on immigrants who don’t show a willingness to adapt to German society.

Benoit Mandelbrot aged 85 has died. Dr Mandelbrot a French American mathematician renown for his study of fractal geometry, a ground breaking method to measure irregular outlines. The fractal geometry he developed by his mathematical formulas created intricate shapes that enabled the measure of natural phenomena once believed to be immeasurable  such as clouds and coastlines. His theory was applied to such diverse disciplines such as finance physics and biology. Dr Mandelbrot became professor emeritus at Yale University, originating from Poland he moved as a child with his family to be educated in France. The geometric shapes he created attracted a pop culture status due to their stunningly beautiful representations.

Mary MacKillop a strong-willed and determined leader who co-founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1867 and died in 1909 has been canonized to become Australia’s first Catholic saint. Claimed as a feminist before her time, she issued instructions to the nuns of her order that when women got the vote in Australia “It is the duty on us all to vote . Get advice from some leading man in whom you have confidence or from the priest, but keep your voting secret.” MacKillop and her order in 1871 were excommunicated after revealing a pedophile priest was engaged in “scandalous behavior” which was subsequently revoked five months later at the Bishop’s deathbed.

Morgan Tsvangirai Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister claimed he was disgusted with the countries President Robert Mugabe and suggested that foreign governments should not recognize Zimbabwe’s ambassadors. Under a power-sharing deal following the disputed 2008 elections a 24 month timetable was set for the drafting of a new constitution which has been delayed by a lack of funds and disagreement over committee composition. A new constitution is regarded crucial for free and fair elections. Mugabe has been sharing power with Tsvangirai since last year but now claims frustration with the constant wrangling stating the political accord had reached the end of its lifespan and likely to be terminated.

Adapting Pop Art’s notion of mass media imagery into a context of the contemporary digital age, the work draws on a myriad points of reference. Utilizing fractured images to provide an allusion to the digital noise pounding away daily into our sub consciousness.  The work is essentially popular culture arts, diverging from the traditional Pop Art notion of a pronounced repetition of a consumer icon, instead this work focuses on the deluge of contemporary digital content. The compilation of the fragmented imagery is vividly distractive, not unlike cable surfing or a jaunt through Times Square.

This digital photo manipulation art work is premised on the basis that Pop art in its beginnings, freeze-framed what consumers of popular culture experienced into iconic visual abstractions. With the advent of the techno age, visual information circulates in such quantities, so rapidly and exponentially, that to comprehend a fraction of it all becomes a kind of production process in itself.  Hence this work considers fragmented elements of Popular Culture through an artistic and conceptual exploration of specific people and events of the day.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the Iranian president came within a few kilometres of the Israeli border in southern Lebanon on his first state visit to Lebanon. Ahmadinejad visited Hezbollah stronghold towns along the Israeli border that were bombed during the 2006 war with Israel in a highly provocative move that outraged Israeli authorities. Ahmadinejad received a hero’s welcome when tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims gave support to his defiant speech that praised Hezbollah’s resistance of Israel. On the Israeli side of the border civilians protest against the visit demonstrating their opposition to the visit by launching blue and white balloons the colours of Israel’s flag.

Carl P. Paladino the Republican candidate for governor of New York declared to Jewish leaders in Brooklyn  that children should not attend gay pride parades because they featured skimpily dressed men. “It’s disgusting,” he said “exposing them to homosexuality, especially at a gay pride parade — and I don’t know if you have ever been to one, but they wear these little Speedos and they grind against each other and it’s just a terrible thing.” Brian Ellner, the senior strategist for the New York Human Rights Campaign for gay Marriage said Paladino was “Out of touch, out of his mind, and should be out of the race,” implying he is unsuitable to be the New York governor.

Luis Urzua the 54 year old shift foreman and the last trapped man out of the gold and copper mine in northern Chile nearly 600 metres below ground for more than two months has been heralded as the savior of the trapped 33 miners.  Upon reaching the surface he was embraced by the Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. Urzua who first established contact with the rescuers 17 days after the mine collapsed provided the leadership to his trapped colleagues dividing the remaining food and helping rescuers plan the escape route. “I’m proud of being Chilean,” he pronounced on his emergence from the rescue capsule after insisted on being the last of the trapped men to be freed.
