Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known by his stage name ‘Common’, the 38 year old US hip hop artist and black power advocate, has become the centre of a controversy between the White House and right wing extremist commentators. ‘Common’ at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama appeared at the White House for a poetry reading, resulting in an outcry over the lyrics of his songs that provide support to specific convicted killers in which the evidence leading to their convictions being somewhat questionable. While most commentators have described ‘Common’ as progressive and positive, the more extremist find cause to be outraged over the lyrics of a couple of songs taken out of context of his overall prolific body of work known for its socially consciousness. Michele Marie Bachmann the 54 year old US Congress Representative supporter of the Tea Party movement I think you just got a new definition of the nanny (February 27 2011)

Michele Marie Bachmann the 54 year old US Congress Representative supporter of the Tea Party movement and founder of the House Tea Party Caucus has criticized First lady Michelle Obama for encouraging the creation of a “nanny state” during debates relating to breast-feeding following an announcement by the Internal Revenue Service that the purchase of breast-feeding equipment would be considered a medical expense and would qualify for reimbursement under federal tax law. Bachmann a well known and frequent critic of the Obama administration’s policies, attempted to link the decision with what she refers to as the “hard left” agenda. On the first anniversary of the “Let’s Move” campaign to fight childhood obesity, the first lady said, “Breast-feeding. Kids who are breast-fed longer have a lower tendency to be obese.”
