Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known by his stage name ‘Common’, the 38 year old US hip hop artist and black power advocate, has become the centre of a controversy between the White House and right wing extremist commentators. ‘Common’ at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama appeared at the White House for a poetry reading, resulting in an outcry over the lyrics of his songs that provide support to specific convicted killers in which the evidence leading to their convictions being somewhat questionable. While most commentators have described ‘Common’ as progressive and positive, the more extremist find cause to be outraged over the lyrics of a couple of songs taken out of context of his overall prolific body of work known for its socially consciousness.
