Ian Murray McKellen the 71 year old English Shakespearean actor renowned for his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy has challenged The Tate museum to exhibit its collection of LS Lowry paintings, and if not then to put them up for sale. McKellen has questioned The Tates motives for failing to ever display 22 of its 23 Lowry works over the past 50 years, and the single piece that was displayed was a brief token gesture. McKellen suggests the motive may lie in the museum’s bias against provincial works, with Lowry’s name sullied by false accusations that he was an amateur untrained Sunday painter. Lowry is often referred to as the ‘matchstick men’ painter whose paintings represented the character and landscape of the north and its people.
